Cub Campers – Caravan-Trailer Weighing Systems

Future proofing weighing system for camper trailer manufacturer

Manufacturers of towable road going vehicles such as Caravans, Campers, and Trailers have an obligation to accurately record the weight of the equipment they produce to comply with Government Legislation and enhance customer confidence.

Anyone who has ever considered purchasing any type of trailer or caravan will recall details of the overall weight & “tow ball” weight being included in the vehicle specification sheets.

NWI Group have developed a weighing solution that enables manufacturers to meet these regulatory obligations. The NWI solution is based on two separate inground weighing platforms which provide a separate axle group weight and tow ball / jockey wheel weight.

This information is then summed to provide a total vehicle weight. These values are critical for vehicle registrations and for consumers wanting to ensure suitability when paired with their towing vehicle to ensure legal compliance.

The system can interface with a colour touch screen terminal with built in printer for simple operation, with the ability to store / record/ manage details.

The Challenge

The customer needed to upgrade their Camper Trailer weighing system that had certainly seen better days (although was still functioning). It was considered necessary to modernise the system, the process, and the weighing approach.

The Solution

NWI provided 2 separate in-ground weighing platforms, connected to 1 single Diade – colour touch screen terminal, with built in ticket printer, and transaction storage/record keeping function.

Custom weighing software was developed to increase the amount of data captured during the weighing process, but in a manner than presents as very user friendly and intuitive at an operator level.

This combination of components ensures that the axle weight, and “towball” weight are recorded individually, whilst also in a combined “total” weight format to ensure all critical aspects of the trailer weights were captured to satisfy the legal requirements for road registered vehicles.

The Outcome

Our client have been able to significantly increase their trailer weighing efficiency in several key areas such as time, accuracy, storage of transaction records & reduced manual handling of the old trailer weighing system.

The trailer is reversed into position by the operator driving a small tractor. The trailer axle is positioned on the large weighing platform, and the jockey when aligns with the other.  The operator selects the model of the trailer from the system’s menu, adds the VIN details, selects how many tickets to print, and the process is now complete.

All weighing records are stored in memory in a CSV format and can be simply transferred to a USB device for additional evaluation, or filtering on a PC in EXCEL.

The finished system is sleek, modern, efficient, practical, and well placed to serve the needs of the customer for many years to come.
