A large coal mine, located 4 hours west of Brisbane, was in dire need of a streamlined system to manage the transportation of coal from their site while pertaining to Chain of Responsibility regulations. With 30 different truck configurations, including 35-meter road trains that transport up to 110 tons of coal and have 16 axels to weigh, the coal mine required a solution that could handle it all. That’s where NWI stepped in.
NWI, a leading provider of weighing systems and automation technology, was contracted to provide a simple operation for drivers that would give an accurate weight and ensure compliance with the Australian Heavy Vehicle Register (HVR) limits of loads allowed on truck axel weights on highways around Australia. NWI’s solution involved the implementation of their trade-approved Centurion 40 Meter Dual Bridge, which has a capacity of 150 tons and three driver control stations.
The heart of the automation system is NWI’s Flexpoint Software program, which registers the trucks through the Automatic Plate Number Recognition (APNR) cameras and guides the trucks onto the bridge with a series of traffic lights to engage the drivers to weigh each of the axel groups statically for accuracy. Most of the trucks are stored in the database, but there is also a process for unregistered trucks to capture their tare weights and weigh off once loaded.
As the truck is being weighed, the tolerance of the axel groups is compared with the stored allowable limits for the truck type and displayed on the eight display poles. Each axel group weight is shown to the drivers and if acceptable (green light displays) or overweight (red light displays). If the truck driver is within the tolerances for the vehicle type, a printed docket is provided to the driver as proof for any Transport Roads Department checks that occur on the National Highways. If the truck driver is over the limits, it can return to be easily reweighed once it has been emptied and reloaded.
The data for each truck is collated and emailed to the mine and trucking company for their recording and followed up with daily, weekly, and monthly reports. NWI’s powerful Flexpoint program, coupled with automation accessories, provides many solutions for the industry. A discussion with the NWI team can assist in finding the right solution for your business.
In conclusion, NWI’s innovative solution has revolutionised coal transport, ensuring compliance with heavy vehicle regulations while providing drivers with an efficient and user-friendly system. With their advanced technology and expertise, NWI is leading the charge in providing cutting-edge solutions for the industry.
